When getting it wrong feels scary

A short cartoon about one wobbly note, with your child as the hero. Watch it together at a calm time, then talk.

An example story beginning for this moment. It is not a cartoon of your own story.

Cartoons are made with AI. You preview each one before your child sees it. Automatic checks can miss things.

Illustration, made with AI: a girl and her dad kneel by a small xylophone, each holding a mallet over one bar, while a glowing firefly leaves a trail in the air that curls into a little bell.

Let's imagine

Example, made with AI

Mia (6) kneels by a little xylophone with a mallet in her hand. She doesn't play. "What if it sounds wrong?" she asks. Dad sits beside her with his own mallet. "Let's try one note each." Mia taps a bar, and the note wobbles. Dad taps his, and his wobbles too. "Listen, a duck," says Dad. Mia tilts her head. "Mine's a bell." She taps a second bell. Nobody compares the two sounds.

The characters in this example are made up. Your child can be the hero, with or without a photo.

What happens in the story

In the example above:

  • Mia says out loud what she is worried about: it might sound wrong.
  • Dad plays too, and his note wobbles. He laughs.
  • They each try just one note. Mia hears a bell in hers and plays another.
  • Nobody compares the sounds or says whose is better.

Talk-after card

Here are three gentle questions to talk about after this example. Best watched together, then followed by a chat or a game.

  1. What did Mia say before she played?
  2. What did Dad do when his note wobbled?
  3. What would you like to play, or to try one note of? You choose.

Use the ones that feel right. Skip any you like.

What a cartoon can and can't do

  • Fears are common. If fear keeps stopping your child from sleeping or doing everyday things, talk to your child's doctor.
  • A cartoon can't promise that a first try goes well. It can show one small step with a grown-up close.
  • Every family has its own pace.
  • Each Zubby cartoon is made to be talked about together. It can't do the work of routine, patience or your child's doctor.
  • If you are worried about your child's sleep, eating, fears or behavior, talk to your child's doctor, nurse or teacher.
