When you're moving to a new home

A short cartoon about missing the old home and finding something new, starring your child. Watch it together at a calm time, then talk.

An example story beginning for this moment. It is not a cartoon of your own story.

Cartoons are made with AI. You preview each one before your child sees it. Automatic checks can miss things.

Illustration, made with AI: a boy stands in a new room among boxes while a grown-up unpacks a lamp and Zubby floats beside them.

Let's imagine

Example, made with AI

Mia (6) is in her new room, surrounded by boxes. She takes a paper star from one box. "I miss our old window," she says. Her mom sits beside her. "Tell me about it?" Mia does. Then she sees a patch of sun on the new windowsill and puts the star there. "I'll look a little more tomorrow." She still misses the old window.

The characters in this example are made up. Your child can be the hero, with or without a photo. The picture at the top shows the moment, not these characters.

What happens in the story

In the example above:

  • Mia says what she misses, in plain words.
  • Her mom listens and doesn't hurry.
  • Mia finds one small new thing to look at.
  • She still misses the old home. The story lets her.

Talk-after card

Here are three gentle questions to talk about after this example. Best watched together, then followed by a chat or a game.

  1. What did Mia miss about the old home?
  2. What did Mia find in the new home?
  3. Is there something you miss, and something you're curious about? You can tell me both.

Use the ones that feel right. Skip any you like.

What a cartoon can and can't do

  • Research on preparing children for changes at home is thin. This story is one way to start the talk.
  • Each Zubby cartoon is made to be talked about together. It can't do the work of routine, patience or your child's doctor.
  • If you are worried about your child's sleep, eating, fears or behavior, talk to your child's doctor, nurse or teacher.
  • Zubby is a family storytelling tool, not a medical, therapeutic or educational treatment. Zubby cartoons have not been tested in studies.
