When it's hard to find things at preschool

A short cartoon about a row of cubbies and one small kite from home, starring your child. Watch it together at a calm time, then talk.

An example story beginning for this moment. It is not a cartoon of your own story.

Cartoons are made with AI. You preview each one before your child sees it. Automatic checks can miss things.

Illustration, made with AI: a girl points at her cubby in a long row of wooden cubbies, a hand-made paper kite taped to its door, while her grandma smiles behind her and a glowing firefly lights the kite.

Let's imagine

Example, made with AI

Mia (4) walks into preschool with Grandma. A long row of wooden cubbies stands along the wall, and they all look alike. "Which one is mine?" Mia asks in a small voice. "Let's look together," says Grandma. Then Mia sees a paper kite taped to one door, the kite she made at home. "That one," she says, pointing. She hangs up her coat and touches the kite once more. "It's still here," she says. Grandma waves from the door.

The characters in this example are made up. Your child can be the hero, with or without a photo.

What happens in the story

In the example above:

  • Mia says out loud that she isn't sure which cubby is hers.
  • Grandma looks with her. She does not point.
  • Mia spots a familiar paper kite, one she made at home.
  • She hangs up her coat. The kite stays where she can see it.

Talk-after card

Here are three gentle questions to talk about after this example. Best watched together, then followed by a chat or a game.

  1. What was hard to find in Mia's new room?
  2. What did Mia and Grandma do? What helped Mia find her cubby?
  3. What small thing from home would you like to have with you? You can tell me, show me, or skip it.

Use the ones that feel right. Skip any you like.

What a cartoon can and can't do

  • Every preschool has its own rules about cubbies and labels. Ask your child's teacher what is allowed.
  • Every family has its own pace.
  • Each Zubby cartoon is made to be talked about together. It can't do the work of routine, patience or your child's doctor.
  • If you are worried about your child's sleep, eating, fears or behavior, talk to your child's doctor, nurse or teacher.
