When your child is moving to a new group at preschool

A short cartoon about a bigger room and a basket of blocks you know, starring your child. Watch it together at a calm time, then talk.

An example story beginning for this moment. It is not a cartoon of your own story.

Cartoons are made with AI. You preview each one before your child sees it. Automatic checks can miss things.

Illustration, made with AI: a boy holding one wooden block stands at the door of a big sunny preschool room with his grandpa, and a glowing firefly peeks over a basket of blocks holding up a matching one.

Let's imagine

Example, made with AI

Omar (3) stands at the door of his new group with Grandpa. The room is bigger, with new faces. Omar doesn't go in. Then he spots a basket of blocks, the same blocks as in his old room. "Start with these?" asks Grandpa. Omar takes one and holds it tight. A teacher shows him a low shelf where it can go. "They build bridges here too," says Omar. He sets the block down. The rest of the room can wait.

The characters in this example are made up. Your child can be the hero, with or without a photo.

What happens in the story

In the example above:

  • Omar stops at the door of the new room and doesn't go in yet.
  • He spots a basket of blocks he already knows.
  • Grandpa asks a question and lets Omar decide. A teacher shows where the block can go.
  • Omar sets it down. The rest of the room can wait.

Talk-after card

Here are three gentle questions to talk about after this example. Best watched together, then followed by a chat or a game.

  1. What did Omar see in the new room that he already knew?
  2. What did Grandpa ask? What did Omar do with the block?
  3. In a new room, what would you like to look for first: something you know, a friend, or a quiet spot? You choose.

Use the ones that feel right. Skip any you like.

What a cartoon can and can't do

  • A cartoon can't make a new room feel familiar. Your child's teachers can show the room and tell you how the day goes.
  • Every family has its own pace.
  • Each Zubby cartoon is made to be talked about together. It can't do the work of routine, patience or your child's doctor.
  • If you are worried about your child's sleep, eating, fears or behavior, talk to your child's doctor, nurse or teacher.
